HEAD2ART is an initiative to establish a museum-based program supporting the NSW Department of Education’s Wellbeing Framework in fostering students to Connect, Succeed and Thrive. This pilot program was proudly delivered on Awabakal Land in 2023, at MAC yapang.
The works on display represent the students' quick five to ten-minute check-in artworks, drawing on the art therapy practice of understanding oneself better through artwork rather than words. Additionally, some works are responses to past exhibitions: Marikit Santiago's We Eat This Bread and the yapang Emerging Art Prize finalist exhibition.
We would like to sincerely thank the students from Lake Macquarie for participating in this pilot of HEAD2ART. Their active participation, talent, and courage have played a pivotal role in the success of this initiative.
Thank you also to High School Principal Brendan Maher, Head Teacher Wellbeing Bronwyn Svihla and Student Support Officer Tony Bell from Lake Macquarie High for supporting the HEAD2ART initiative.
This pilot HEAD2ART has been partially funded by the NSW Government's Children and Young People Wellbeing Recovery Initiative Grant. It brings together the following collaborators: Visual Art and Public Program leader Joanna Davies from Lake Macquarie City Council, Community Development Officer Byron Williams from headspace, and Researcher and Art Therapist Dr Helena Bezzina from the University of Newcastle’s School of Humanities, Creative Industries and Social Sciences
