Join us for a fun day out at MAC yapang to celebrate the conclusion of this year's Dobell Festival and the artist's love of his dogs

A Dog Day Out at the Museum of Art and Culture yapang as part of Dobell Festival, which celebrates the life and work of artist Sir William Dobell.

A Dog Day Out is a dog-friendly art event that celebrates the pooch in contemporary art, life and culture.

A team of artists, writers and photographers will work together to create amazing images of your dogs. You can choose to book in for a pet photography session with Lizz Mackenzie, or grab a coveted spot to have your dog sketched by artist Peter Lankas. Meanwhile, listen to musician Tony Jozef howling out a few of your favourite dog tunes on the MAC yapang terrace. Or choose a DIY option and photograph your canine companion in front of a hand-painted William Dobell inspired backdrop. Feeling creative? Book in for a pet portrait painting and drawing workshop with artist Ileana Clarke, or settle down to write about your pet with Helen Hopcroft. Bring your dog (on lead) and a picnic and enjoy a day in the beautiful grounds of MAC yapang.

Exhibition: The Artist and His Dogs

8 June – 4 August

At a young age, and while studying drawing at night, William Dobell found his first job as a ‘dog-walloper’. His duties in this job were to keep dogs from ruining shop display windows, by chasing them away.

As an artist who left school at the age of 14 to forge his own path, this interaction with man’s best friend grew as did his practice. In this intimate set of photographs loaned from the AGNSW Archive Collection, we see a snippet of Dobell in his homelife, the artist with his dogs in Lake Macquarie
