"On the lookout' was originally formed from a found objects, a wire armature, paper pulp from shredded office paper and rendered with iridescent blue flock and is now cast in bronze.
It was my intent to embue in the form, a sense of looking forward to the future with optimism and to capture a spirit of vigilance and a hopeful outlook on tomorrow." (Marlene Houston)
Marlene Houston is predominantly a sculptor working figuratively, interested in and focusing on the human condition. As a strong supporter of human rights, her work invariably takes inspiration from this perspective. Her work has always centred on the human form; abstracted and manipulated in an attempt to expose the inner dimensions of humanity and the forces exerted on them.
Houston likes to experiment in various mediums and frequently uses recycled elements in her work. This constant flow from one medium to another has seen her work made from varying materials such as bronze, aluminium, wood, glass, concrete and more recently paper.
