Your Collection: Today’s Paper

Your Collection: Today’s Paper brings into focus the ongoing partnership between Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

The value of the relationship is cemented in action as evinced by the excellence of the gallery’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander programming over the past 15 years including exhibitions, projects, community workshops, and school education – all developed in consultation with the Aboriginal Reference Group.

More recently, the gallery has begun collecting works on paper by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. Although still in its genesis, this sub-collection is a striking reflection of the gallery’s record of genuine Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community collaboration and connection.

Not only are all of the artworks of a high quality, but also many of the artists have a direct association with the gallery through inclusion in past exhibitions, as workshop tutors or as artists in residence, thus imbuing the subcollection with meaning beyond the material. Collecting in this direction, together with joining the newly formed Aboriginal Cultural Heritage and Arts Association, reinforces the gallery’s commitment to becoming a part of the network of cultural custodians and organisations dedicated to the complex but rewarding tasks of retaining and preserving artworks hand-in hand with nurturing and maintaining community bonds – past, present and future.
