john montefiore.jpg

John Montefiore was a well-known artist and teacher, who tutored part-time at both the National Art School, Sydney and Newcastle branch into the mid 70s. He then joined the academic staff of the Hunter Institute of Higher Education.

Montefiore undertook major commissions in the Hunter region including a mural for the refurbished Newcastle Town Hall, and a chapel altarpiece for Christchurch Cathedral, Newcastle.

In 1992 his painting Life Series was awarded the SulmanArt Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW. Montefiore’s works are held in several regional public and university collections as well as the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

This suite of 14 pen-and-ink drawings was made in preparation for print in the publication The Fishing Boy, written by Norman Talbot and published in 1973 by South Head Press.

The subject matter of the illustrations was drawn from Montefiore’s own memories and identification with the Lake Macquarie region.
