In 1990, the Newcastle Photographic Society gifted over 90 photographs by the photographer Charles Collin (1896-1982) to Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery, a collection of work that includes cityscapes, landscapes and portraits.
Although not a widely known photographer, Collin was, nonetheless, highly accomplished as acknowledged through being awarded the distinction of Artiste Fédération Internationale de l’Art Photographique in 1962 and 1963.
The works featured in the exhibition Your Collection: Charles Collin are drawn from Collin’s photographs of the Australian Broken Hill Proprietary Co Ltd Steelworks (BHP) and the Port of Newcastle, and are perhaps the most evocative and engaging of his entire body of work.
