Four contemporary artists working across various media probe the intersection of physical form and visual perception in the exhibition Shifter at MAC yapang.

Central to their practices is the ever-present phenomena of light. In addition to being biologically fundamental to life on earth, it is through light that we perceive matter and time. Photomedia, the dominant modality used in this exhibition, imposes the capture and archive of its subject. Yet the precariousness of the medium to faithfully render matter is revealed.

The artists investigate new ways of experiencing nature and ourselves in relation to it, as we come to terms with the urgency of existential and environmental crises. Their artworks oscillate between and bring awareness to, the blurred boundaries of analogue and digital, of human and artificial intelligence, and of our real and virtual encounters.

About the Artists

Brisbane-based artist Marian Drew has sustained an illustrious career spanning four decades. Throughout her artistic journey, Drew has masterfully crafted photographs that blend intricate fictions with palpable realities, using her unique performative approach to reveal hidden narratives. She is represented by Onespace on Meanjin Country (West End, Queensland).

Monika Morgenstern was born near Cologne in Germany. She currently lives and works in Strathalbyn, South Australia on Ngarrindjeri Country. With a long-standing interest in colour, human perception, and phenomenology, Morgenstern’s practice explores multiple expressions of the numinous through experiments in light and its effect on glass, digital prints, lightboxes, and projections.

Rebecca Najdowski is a Naarm (Melbourne)-based artist who whose work examines imaging technologies, the mediation of nature, and visualisations of the climate emergency. Using analogue and digital materials — often counter to their intended use — her artworks offer alternative modes to habitual ways of seeing, and sensing, more-than-human nature.

Adelaide born Ioulia Panoutsopoulos is a multidisciplinary artist working in Tharawal (Sydney). Intersecting photographic, drawing and sculptural practices, Ioulia seeks light, possibility and spatial propositions in dialogue with quantum and material inquiry, perceptual expansion and consciousness.
