Shift: Place Changing

100 Forms of Happiness (SG ) 2003_high res.jpg

Notions of specific cultural identity, and our ‘place’, are rapidly shifting with the global impact of information technologies, entertainment media and trade. Alongside these are the more direct influences of migration and diaspora. Not surprisingly, larger numbers of visual artists the world over are scrutinizing these shifts in their practice and reflecting them back to audiences.

SHIFT: places changing presents a selection of installation, photo media and textile works produced by just such a group of artists. Although most live in Australia, they are from disparate cultural backgrounds and each processes his or her perceptions of the changes through the filter of personal heritage, time and/or place.
