Shedding Skin is the result of a collaborative project by Burgess and Neilson, funded through a University of Newcastle Project Grant in 2005.
The aim was to provide an interface between virtual digital technology and handmade art objects. Digitally manipulated photographic images of human hands were printed onto a variety of materials, through the process of photolithography, at The Australian Print Workshop in Melbourne, Victoria. Two-dimensional hand images were adapted to the form of sewing templates for gloves. Following the printing process, hand/gloves were sewn from the printed materials. In effect, three-dimensional glove ‘skins’ were formed from high quality prints.
