MAC Society Second Saturdays: Ceramic Art

ceramic mac society.jpg

Ceramicist Connie Keith, from Pottery at the Point, will be our guest artist on Saturday 12 June 2021. Connie, who comes from a career teaching chemistry, decided after retirement to take her skills and experience in a new direction, and master the art of being a potter. And she has certainly mastered much of that discipline. Her name will be known to many MAC Society members and friends because she was a finalist in the Lake Art Prize 2020, with a lovely ceramic work depicting delicate marine forms.

In fact, there is a vast range of disciplines within pottery, and Connie has enthusiastically embraced many of the arts and skills appropriate to those disciplines — how to prepare and shape clay on a potter’s wheel or by hand or with appropriate tools; how to fire different pieces at appropriate temperatures; how to work with firing regimes to manage different outcomes; how to apply and manage various glazes; and other subtle disciplines and practices.

Connie will show us examples of her work, across a range of pottery styles, tell us how she went about creating various pieces, chat with us about the “hands on” details of being a ceramicist in particular, or more generally, a potter, and allow us to engage her with questions and comments during the presentation.

This rather informal event will be pitched at just the right level for those of us who admire ceramics and other forms of pottery, would like to know more about the discipline, but have never become actual practitioners of the art. It will give us all an inside look at pottery: part learning, part shared social occasion, part visual entertainment, part inspiration, and overall an enjoyable and memorable art experience.
