Matthew is a Hunter-based artist who has maintained an active studio and exhibitions practice since 1986. His creative practice is wide ranging in both its intellectual and material scope and extends across painting, sculpture, kinetic and time-based media.
The works chosen for this exhibition, while only representing a small fragment of his output, nonetheless provide an insight into his thinking and methods. Like many artists, Matthew uses drawing not only as an end in itself, but as an investigative tool to explore ideas and imagery, as well as compositional, colour and mark making possibilities. In many cases, his drawings precede larger and more complex works in media that, due to technical and material constraints, require a more considered and sustained approach in their making.
While only providing a snapshot of the artist’s practice, these paintings hint at his wide-ranging interests in science and history, and the nature of perception.
