SANDY SANDERSON
Radical Softness 2021
screen printing, digital art, textiles

Radical Softness is a sensory body of work that invites audiences to embrace themselves with softness and to give reverence to the body. Aimed to induce stimulation through textures, hypnotic shapes and colour therapy, the work evokes feelings of play, safety and positivity, serving as a shrine to honour the act of birth.

The repetition of screen printing throughout the body of work reveals abstract interpretations of the womb and the cycle of life. These Op Art inspired designs are sewn into tapestries, representing and celebrating the myriad of life.

Sandy Sanderson is an experimental artist who works within soft sculpture, printing and textiles. Sandy’s practice is highly sensory and inspired by cosplay, where alter egos emerge. The love of Adornism and launching the fashion label Lurline Avangeline has provided a foundation for Sandy’s exploration into textile and wearable art.

Currently undertaking a Bachelor of Creative Practice at Newcastle Art School and as a disabled artist living with chronic pain, Sandy has found that her physical limitations are central to making work of this nature.

This iteration of Art in Your Community showcases talent produced from the major art school within our region and serves as inspiration to the youth within First Class 21. Sharing common themes with the exhibition Political Women, it celebrates life, birth and the feminine, while challenging the notions of domestic arts.
