Yarns Parai – Stories on Country

Yarns Parai.jpg

Yarns Parai – Stories on Country 2020 shares traditional Stories of Country that are culturally connected with the Proposed Lower Hunter Freight Corridor.

Transport of NSW engaged Professor John Maynard, Saretta Fielding and Team to conduct an Aboriginal cultural values assessment to help inform the investigation, selection and preservation of a freight rail corridor through the Lower Hunter Valley between Fassifern and Hexham.

Investigations were visualised in the creation of a fine artwork and digital designs of significant cultural places and stories on country. The project was carried out in collaboration with community and knowledge keepers, alongside an archival examination of the historical and cultural materials in connection to the Awabakal people.

Saretta is a Wonaruah woman of the Upper Hunter Valley of NSW, who lives and works on Awabakal land, Lake Macquarie. Her unique practice of painting is comprised of a sand based medium and an engraving technique. Within her work she aims to evoke emotion, enhance connection to spirit and country, and invite the viewer to ponder and experience something new.
