Using a sketchbook in plein air allows for immediate responses to the landscape that consider mood, atmosphere and activity.

Sketchbooks are an integral part of an artist’s practice. Using a sketchbook in plein air allows for immediate responses to the landscape that consider mood, atmosphere and activity. We will take inspiration from Dobell’s painterly ‘sketches’ of the lake and the techniques he employed.

The sketchbooks will then be developed in the studio, pushing the imagery further through expressive mark making, colour palette choices, compositional emphasis and mixed media layering.

A range of water-based paint and drawing media will be used.
